Your commentary on self care and longevity resonated with me so much, and I feel like it’s something I don’t hear talked about enough. It’s not about being vain— I want to be an active grandparent some day, I want to be able to travel, to hike, to move my body into my 70-80-90s. I want to be independent for as long as possible! And with that I will never understand the mother martyrs. So thankful to have an equal partner that is happy to let me have time for all kinds of self care.
My kids are in their 20s now, but I'll never forget reading a parenting forum (maybe BabyCenter?) where a woman asked for advice getting her husband to help more with the baby. She just wanted him to 'watch' the baby for a few hours while she met a friend for dinner, go to a movie or get her nails done. The vast majority of women gave her suggestions (imo, you tell your husband I am going out on Tuesday, you need to be home by 6) but a very vocal minority told her she shouldn't have any personal time, she is a mom now. Literally said "you can get all the manicures you want in 20 years, your 'me time' is over'. It was shocking.
Ugh! Pam! I’m shocked but also not shocked!! I’m firmly “you do you” but am always amazed that people feel that way & I can’t help but wonder why. We don’t give up our personhood when we become mothers!! Thank you for reading & commenting!
